FAQS ABOUT Muay Thai Gloves
When it comes to sizing, most standard adult Muay Thai gloves are measured by ounces (oz). Models typically have sizes from 8oz to 16oz, with sizes going up in 2oz increments. Some designs will feature 6oz size for kids and sparring specific gloves may go up to 20-24oz.
Our general guidelines for glove sizes are:
- 12-16oz gloves for padwork, bagwork & partner drills. For those who are above 82kg/180lbs, 14 or 16oz gloves are recommended
- 16 oz gloves for sparring. Larger gloves will provide adequate padding to protect yourself and your training partners
For beginners, having one pair of 16oz is recommended as it will allow you to participate in all types of training without needing to buy more than one glove when starting out.
Additionally, opt for 16oz gloves for padwork and bagwork if your goal is to build conditioning and muscular endurance.
At Fight Quarters, we frequently get asked which model of Muay Thai gloves are the best and we always say that, as long as you’re purchasing from the industry trusted brands like Fairtex, Twins Special & Top King, it’ll ensure that you’ll have a high quality glove that's been made specifically for Muay Thai and has gone through countless years of design improvements for the demands of the sport.
But between the different brands and models, there is no definitive single “best glove”. It will depend on personal preferences, body build, training regimen and even fighting styles. However, if you’re a newcomer looking for their first pair, our recommendations are either the Fairtex BGV1 Universal “Tight-Fit” Gloves, Twins Special Boxing Gloves BGVL3 or Top King Super “AIR” Gloves . These models are great starting points, durable, and will last you a long time into your Muay Thai journey. You’ll find that these are the exact same gloves that are being used by professional fighters in Thailand and around the world, so you can stay assured you’re getting the top-tier equipment and quality constructed to last.
It depends on the size of the glove. If your gloves are 14oz or above, then you probably can use it for all 3 purpose. However, anything lower than 14oz, you risk injuring your training and sparring partners. For non-beginners, we strongly advise to have at least 2 pairs of gloves, one for padwork, bagwork & drills and one specifically for sparring.
For most people, we recommend Velcro Cuff gloves since they are easier to put on and take off during training. Lace-Up Gloves require a partner to help you tighten them up which can be time consuming and a hassle. For people who are training for a fight, they may opt for a pair of Lace-Ups to familiarize with the feeling of a Lace-Up competition glove before their fight although it is not entirely necessary to do so.
For beginners, we recommend having one pair of all-around gloves at either 12oz or 14oz which can be used for padwork, bagwork and partner drills. If you’re a beginner that is looking to spar already, then we recommend a single pair of 16oz gloves.
For intermediate practitioners, we recommend having at least 2 pairs of gloves. One pair dedicated for sparring that is 16oz or at the minimum of 14oz to ensure the safety of your training partners. Then a second pair that is ideally 10-12oz for padwork, bagwork and partner drills.
For advanced practitioners, amateur & professional fighters, we recommend having multiple gloves in rotation due to frequent heavy usage wearing down the glove padding. Our advice is to have at least 3 pairs of gloves in active rotation. One pair of 16 oz for sparring, and at least 2 pairs of 8-12oz gloves for padwork & heavy bag work with one of them being either 8oz gloves or bag gloves that will allow for strong feedback on the knuckles that ensures you’re landing accurately and with proper technique.
When it comes to Muay Thai gloves, there isn’t a single "best" brand. However, it's difficult to go wrong if you shop from trusted and leading Thai brands—which we stock here at Fight Quarters. Brands such as Fairtex, Twins Special and Top King all produce high-quality and long-lasting gloves used by both amateur and professional fighters in training and competition at the highest levels globally.
While each brand features its own unique designs, fits, molds, and styles, we recommend trying out different gloves during your fight journey. As you progress and have more experience under your belt, you'll likely form preferences that will cater to your fighting and training style. But the great news is, the Thai brands we offer have all stood the test of time when it comes to design, quality construction and performance.
