FAQS ABOUT Muay Thai & Boxing Handwraps
There are 2 main types of Handwraps for Muay Thai: Cotton and Cotton Elastic handwraps. Cotton handwraps are only made from cotton and are generally more stiff than Cotton Elastic ones.
Cotton Elastic handwraps are made from cotton and polyester blends which provide the ability to stretch, fit comfortably on the hand and provide better breathability, which is why we recommend cotton elastic hand wraps for most people..
Nowadays, you may also find some brands with “quick-wrap” style Handwraps that come in a preformed shape where you can slide your hand in, which are tightened with a velcro wrist. Although more convenient, they can be less comfortable as the preformed quick-wrap may likely not conform to your hands shape and size the same way traditional handwraps do, which is why we often don’t recommend them.
The main benefit of Handwraps are that they provide extra padding and support for the knuckles, wrist, small bones and joints in the hands during training. They help prevent injuries like fractures and sprains when doing padwork, heavy bagwork, sparring and types of training.
Another added benefit is that, handwraps also absorb sweat from your hands, keeping the inside of gloves drier and reducing odor - but this doesn’t mean you don’t need to air and clean your gloves!
Yes, we always recommend that Handwraps to be worn under all types of Gloves during training, this includes Muay Thai Gloves for padwork, drills & sparring, Bag Gloves for the heavy bagwork or with MMA style gloves as well
They provide essential support and protection that gloves alone do not offer. Even with well-padded and tightly secured gloves, training without wraps greatly increases the risk of hand and wrist injuries. You’ll find that your gloves will fit loosely and unsecured without Handwraps as gloves are all designed with additional space inside to accommodate the added bulk of handwraps.
There are only a couple of acceptable exceptions to training without Handwraps. For example, when you’re exclusively training clinching or elbow strikes that do not involve throwing heavy punches.
Handwraps are more or less the same across different brands, as long as you’re using trusted Muay Thai brands like Fairtex, Twins Special, Top King, Boon & Windy, which all make high quality elastic cotton wraps using durable materials and stitching. Our best selling handwraps are the Fairtex Handwraps, they’re a no-nonse pair of wraps that come in plain solid colors and are one of the most comfortable wraps we’ve worn.
Handwraps generally come in one size at 180”/4.5M long which are suitable for most people. Some brands may offer shorter handwraps at 120”/3M long which are suitable for kids or people with smaller hands. Although handwraps may seem long, bear in mind that gloves are designed with additional space inside for them be worn with handwraps,
Ideally, handwraps should be washed after each training session to prevent bacteria growth and bad odors.! If you really can’t wash it after each time, at a maximum, wash them after every 3 uses but you must take them out of your gym bag and hang them to let them completely air dry each time.
Anymore than 3 times, the smell will start to build up - and even if you recognize the smell, your training partners and gym mates will definitely be able to.
To wash your handwraps, we recommend hand washing them in a bucket of warm water and gentle detergent. If you want to use the washing machine, you MUST place them in a mesh bag or a thin pillowcase first. We recommend only placing a single pair in each bag to prevent the wraps from tangling with each other.
Make sure that you DO NOT place handwraps by themselves in the washing machine as they can be stretched, damaged and torn and tangled up with other pieces of clothing.
To dry handwraps after washing, simply hang them on a clotheslines or clothes hanger to let them air dry in a well ventilated dry place. We generally DO NOT recommend using a drying machine to tumble dry them as the heat can easily melt the elastic in the handwraps and also damage the Velcro.
If you use a drying machine because you live in a cold climate where air drying is difficult, you must use the delicate or lowest setting on the air dryer, which should be under 52°C/125°F. As the same with washing them in a machine, ensure you place a maximum of one pair of handwraps in a mesh bag or pillowcase before tumble drying them to prevent them from tangling.
Lastly, you should not let it tumble dry for a continuous prolonged period of time and check every 3-5 minutes to prevent the handwraps from overheating and becoming damaged.
Washing wraps after each use is the best way to prevent odor. After training, always take your handwraps out of your gym bag. If you’re not washing them immediately, spray them with disinfectant or deodorizing spray and let them air out in a well ventilated and dry place..
Some people also soak their wraps in vinegar or baking soda solutions to neutralize smells, although we don’t find this necessary unless you have trouble getting out persistent odors from normal washing.
The lifespan of Handwraps will depend on the quality of the Handwraps, frequency of use and the level of care and maintenance. High quality wraps from authentic Muay Thai brands can generally last at least a year with proper care and frequent usage (2-3 times a week). You’ll find that cheaper quality wraps will start to lose their elasticity and fray within a few months or even a few washes!
When your handwraps begin to develop tears and holes in the fabric, or if the velcro stops securing tightly, these are signs you need new handwraps!
